Introduction

The state of Utah currently has one of the highest rape rates in the nation. It is ten percent higher than the national rate. It is estimated that 1/3 of girls in the state of Utah will be sexually assaulted by the time they turn 18.

Rape and sexual assault victims suffer long after the incident has passed. Victims of sexual assault are:

  1. 26 times more likely to abuse drugs.

  2. 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol.

  3. 6 times more likely to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

  4. 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.

  5. 3 times more likely to suffer from depression.

If you are a victim of sexual assault, or you know someone who is, there are services available! Throughout the state there are Rape Crisis rograms and Rape Recovery programs.

I knew that the rape rate for Utah was really high, but I didn't realize it was so high and actually above the national average. I think a lot of it probably occurs in Provo, but why is it so high in Utah?

You know, I think I might send this to my youngest sister. Shemight need some of this info. Very well done, Hilary. I didn't know a lot of this stuff.

I had no idea Utah rates of rape were so high. After thinking about it, it makes sense since people tend to be too trusting of their environment here. It's important for women of all ages in Utah to know the facts about rape and how to keep themselves safe. This blog is great!

Odds of 1 in 3 are not good. This is really scary. Obviously this is a huge public health issue!
